Cuomo, de Blasio appear at separate rallies in Albany

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo pledged his support of charter schools to thousands of students, parents and teachers who came for a rally on the steps of the state Capitol in Albany Tuesday.

The governor's strong support of charter schools comes as New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has vowed to close three charter schools in Harlem.

The parents who came here say they are very concerned about the future of charter schools in New York City.

De Blasio was in Albany Tuesday trying to convince state lawmakers to adopt a new tax on New York City residents earning more than $500,000 a year. The mayor wants to use that money to pay for universal pre-kindergarten and after-school programs for middle school students.

"Full-day pre-K is one of the greatest tools we have to uplift our children," the mayor said. "And it's been proven over and over again: a child who has quality early childhood education that child is going to go farther in school."

The mayor did meet with the governor Tuesday. But in this election year, raising taxes even if it is to fund popular programs is not like to win support for politicians trying to get re-elected.
