WOODSTOCK, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A northwest suburban police officer had to be extricated from his squad car after a crash that injured two others, including a 15-year-old driver Monday night.

A 2012 Toyota Prius was westbound on Route 14 when it tried to make a left turn onto Dean Street and struck an oncoming Woodstock police car at 6:24 p.m. Monday, according to the McHenry County Sheriff's office. Both the Prius and the squad car had a green light at the time.

The squad car then struck a 2013 Volkswagen which was stopped at the red light northbound on Dean, a statement from the sheriff's office said.

Officer Eric Schmidtke, 42, was extricated from the squad car and taken to Woodstock Hospital, then airlifted to St. Anthony's Hospital in Rockford, the statement said.

Schmidtke, a 15-year veteran of the department, was released from the hospital late Monday night, according to Woodstock police.

The 15-year-old driver of the Prius and an adult passenger were also taken to Woodstock Hospital, while the driver of the Volkswagen was not injured, police said.

The teen, who was driving on a learner's permit, was cited for failure to yield when turning left, the statement said.

The sheriff's Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
