FASTRACK work comes to N, Q, R subway lines

The MTA is shutting down nighttime service at Manhattan stations for the N, Q, and R subway lines so that crews can do "FASTRACK" work in tunnels, stations, and on tracks.

For four straight nights beginning Monday, March 3, and ending Friday morning, March 7, 2014, N, Q, and R trains will not stop at stations in Manhattan.

N trains will run in Queens and Brooklyn only, Q trains are rerouted via the D train 6th Avenue line in Manhattan to and from the 57th Street F station, and R service ends early in Manhattan and Queens.

These are the details, as provided by the MTA:

Travel alternatives:

1. Use nearby stations on the 8 Av AE, 7 Av 12, 6 Av DFQ, and Lexington Av 46 lines instead.

2. Take the 7 for service between Queens and Manhattan.

3. Make key transfers between trains at Queensboro Plaza 7N, 5 Av/42 St-Bryant Pk 7DFQ, Jay St-MetroTech AFN, and Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr 24DN Q.

4. N trains make local R stops between Court St and 59 St, Brooklyn.

NQR trains will operate as follows:

N Two sections (Queens and Brooklyn) as follows: (1) Between Ditmars Blvd and Queensboro Plaza and (2) between Stillwell Av and the Court St R station.

Q trains rerouted via the D in Manhattan as follows:

Manhattan-bound: After DeKalb Av, Q trains run via the D to 47-50 Sts, then to the 57 St F station, the last stop.

Coney Island-bound: Trains originate at the 57 St F station then run via the D to Brooklyn.

Regular Coney Island-bound Q service resumes at DeKalb Av.

R train service end early in Manhattan and Queens as follows:

The last R train to Whitehall St leaves 71 Av at about 8:53 p.m.

The last R train to 71 Av leaves Whitehall St at about 9:53 p.m.

In Brooklyn, R shuttle service between 36 St and 95 St starts early.

    John Lennon's killer was denied release from prison in his eighth appearance before a parole board, New York corrections officials said Friday. The decision on Mark David Chapman by a three-member board came after a hearing Wednesday, the state Department of Corrections said. Chapman fired five shots on Dec. 8, 1980, outside the Dakota apartment house where Lennon lived on Manhattan's Upper West Side, hitting the ex-Beatle four times.
