Following violent scenes in recent weeks as protestors demonstrate in Kiev, Nykoriak, a Detroiter of Ukranian descent, says he feels safe at the hotel where he's been staying for about two weeks. We spoke to him by phone Sunday afternoon.

"I'm actually 2 blocks from Independence Square and I was actually there today," he told Fox 2. "I witnessed about a half a million people that want exactly what the American people already have - they want freedom, they want to be able to move freely, they don't want to be limited to their employment, or limited to salary, they don't want to be bribed at every level of government."

Nykoriak says things are much more tense in the Crimea Region where Russian troops have moved in. So far, Russia's president Vladimir Putin has shows no signs of heeding international demands to withdraw.

"[Putin] is trying in all possible ways to separate the Ukranian people," he says. "But the Ukranian people are much stronger than that."

Anti government protests started in late November. Ukraine's president was ousted Feb. 22 following bloody street protests that left dozens of people dead and hundreds wounded. The nation of 45-million people has been plunged into chaos ever since. For now, Nykoriak says he will stay and watch the situation unfold.
