Temperatures Tumbling As Snowstorm Slowly Moves Away

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

We're now in the midst of the third-snowiest winter in recorded Philadelphia weather history.

The latest numbers show Philadelphia International Airport got to 3.4 inches, putting us at 62.9 inches for the season. The record remains 2009-'10, when we got 78.7 inches.

Now, behind the snow, temperatures are tumbling! Bundle up if you're headed outside.

Monday's highest snow totals are from south of the city, where the snow has been heavier and is continuing to fall late this afternoon.

Ventnor City leads the way, so far, with 7 inches of accumulation. Manahawkin got just over 6 inches, and several other South Jersey towns picked up a half foot by mid-afternoon.

A Winter Storm Warning for Philly and its Pennsylvania suburbs has been lifted, as has a Winter Weather Advisory north and west of the city.

But warnings continue for now in parts of Delaware and South Jersey.

New Jersey declared a snow emergency ahead of the storm, and state offices are closed in Delaware, where a level one driving restriction is going to be lifted soon.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter lifted the city's snow emergency at 11 a.m., which restricted cars from parking on snow emergency routes. Trash or recycling pick up was suspended for the day.

SEPTA was operating on a special schedule this morning.

Speed restriction have been lifted on some area highways, however. The biggest problem on the roads this morning was a jackknifed tractor-trailer that temporarily shut down Interstate 95 North near Penns Landing.

Some schools closed this morning, including the School District of Philadelphia and archdiocesan schools in the city. But many others opted to go with two-hour delays Monday.

The storm started with some sleet and freezing rain Sunday night, then brought accumulating snow to the entire area this morning until the flakes tapered off from northwest to southeast, ending by mid-morning in the city.

The snow should stop by dinnertime in South Jersey and Delaware.

After the snow, the wind is picking up and temperatures are plunging down to single digit temperatures tonight. We could get to 6 degrees, which would break the record of 7 for this date. If we dip to 4 degrees, that would break an all-time low for March!
