Tents Come Down In Lakewood

Posted: Updated:
It looks like yesterday marked the start to the end of Lakewood’s tent city as bulldozers entered the neighborhood to begin clearing unoccupied residences from the woods.

31 residents of Lakewood’s tent city won a court battle which granted them temporary low-income housing for a year through Lakewood Township. The removal of these tents were part of Lakewood’s Solution To End Poverty, or STEPS program aimed at helping promote public awareness and combat poverty in New Jersey.

Minister Steve who has been a strong supporter of tent city doesn’t necessarily see this as progress for the community and fears that these people will be back on the streets after the year of housing is up.

“I believe everybody in America should have a place that they can afford to live in,” he said.

Members of the STEPS program said that the organization is about exactly that—taking steps to help people get back on their feet, help them get jobs and help them do what is necessary to be able to live on their own.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
