Get New Year's Resolutions back on track

Posted: Updated:

We're almost two months into the new year. Have you already fallen off the wagon when it comes to your resolution?

You're not alone! But we're going to help you dust off, and get back on track… starting now.

We kicked 2014, determined. This would be the Year of the Fresh Start! We were going to exercise, get in shape, start paying attention to our health.

But WebMD's Chief Medical Editor Dr. Michael Smith, MD, says a lot of us - may have set ourselves up to fail. Smith says, "With resolutions, where people often go wrong is they go to big. Take one of the most common resolutions, you want to lose weight. You want to lose 50 pounds. Great goal, but completely unrealistic. That's a long-term goal you need to chunk it up into smaller goals."

For example, instead of trying to drop 50 pounds, focus on losing five pounds a month. Think baby steps. And be specific. Dr. Smith says, "You want to make your goals very specific. People who do are ten times more likely to actually reach their goal.

Dr. Smith says the good news is it's never too late to get back on the horse, even if you fell off the bandwagon weeks ago.

But you've got to focus on the long haul. He says, "One of the big things with weight is that people are really gung-ho at the beginning. But the problem is it's easy to get discouraged. You have a week where you don't lose any weight, even weeks where you might gain weight. Those are absolutely normal. One thing about weight loss, I can guarantee, is you will have setbacks. Don't get discouraged."

And finding support is really important. But, keep in mind not everybody is going to be celebrating your slim-down. Smith says, "If you lose weight, if you get healthy and others around you don't, it makes them feel bad about themselves. So if they don't support you, look elsewhere.

Go on Facebook, give all your Facebook friends permission to check in on you, and actually encourage you. Your surrounded by tens, hundreds of friends on Facebook, that's incredible motivation and support."

Tell your friends you goal – that will make you more likely to stick to it. And good luck! You can do this!
