Report finds discipline rate higher at charter schools

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

New numbers released by the Chicago Public Schools show students at charter schools are being expelled and disciplined at a higher rate than students in the rest of the system.

This is all part of a report that allows parents to track disciplinary actions at schools for the first time.

The released stats show African-American students face a higher rate of disciplinary action.

Last school year, about 75 percent of all suspensions were given to black students but only 41 percent of the student body in CPS is African American.

The report also found that privately run charter schools expel students at a higher rate than the rest of the district.

On average charters expelled 61 of every 10,000 students while the district-run schools expelled just five of every 10,000 students.
