Fire signs draft pick Marco Franco

CHICAGO (February 25, 2014) – The ChicagoFire Soccer Club announced Tuesday that it has signed 2014 MLS SuperDraft pickMarco Franco. Per MLS and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"Marco is an athletic, solid player and willadd depth to our backline heading into the 2014 season," said Chicago Fire HeadCoach and Director of Soccer Frank Yallop. "From his performance at the Combineand throughout preseason, we are hoping Marco can transition from thecollegiate level to the professional game."

A 22-year-old defender hailing from ChinoHills, Calif., Franco was selected 13th overall by theFire in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft following a standout four-year career at theUniversity of California-Irvine from 2010-2013. While at Irvine, Francoappeared in 76 matches and tallied ten assists. Franco capped off hiscollegiate career by leading a back line that posted 10 shutouts and allowed aBig West low of 77 shots on goal, garnering 2013 Big West Defender of the Yearand First Team All-Big West honors.

Franco, a CZ Elite FC youth product,represented the OC Blues in USL PDL action.
