Brother, Sister Report 2nd Abduction Attempt Near School

PHILADELPHIA -

The Philadelphia Police Department's Special Victims Unit is investigating the attempted abduction of two elementary students walking to school Monday morning.

Parents said a brother and sister were nearly taken while they walked to Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary School in Hunting Park.

Police said this is the second case in the past week where a student has nearly been taken while heading to school.

Parents told FOX 29's Drew Dickman that they're on edge.

"It's crazy because you don't know if your kid is going to be safe in the morning when you're sending them out, thinking they are going to be safe," Carmen Alvalle said.

Alvalle's 12 year-old son Shidrea Jeter walks 10 minutes to Bethune Elementary every morning.

Reports of an attempted abduction of two of his classmates has her concerned.

"I'm going to worry every day, when they go and come to school," she said.

Alvalle said the school told her a man tried to grab a brother and sister near Percy and Venango, just a few blocks from the school.

She said they were with three friends, who helped them escape.

"If the kids would have never been in the group, they probably would have never made it out, because they started throwing rocks at the guy and the guy left," Alvalle said.

The school passed out a letter to parents Monday morning explaining what had happened.

A school district spokesperson said another student from Bethune reported a man trying to snatch her on Wednesday last week.

She reported it to the school Friday and an initial letter was given to parents.

Jeter said the incidents have made his classmates afraid.

"They were scared, saying now they don't want to come to school anymore because they think they're going to get snatched," he said.

The principal of Bethune advised parents to talk with their children about strangers and the importance of students walking together in groups.

Jeter told us how he'll get to school on Tuesday.

"I'm going to walk with my brothers and I'm going to walk in a crowd, so if anybody tries to snatch me, I'll have witnesses and they'll help me and I won't talk to strangers and keep it moving if someone tries and talks to me," Jeter said.

Police said they're looking into if the two cases are connected.

Alvalle says the description of the man is different from the one she got last week.

"It's uncomfortable because you thought your kids were going to be safe on their way to school, but here we go we have a predator out there waiting on snatching kids," she said.

In the letter to parents, the Bethune principal says they are working with Philadelphia and school police to increase patrols around the school.
