Several inmates injured in fight at Lewis Prison near Buckeye

Posted: Updated:
BUCKEYE, Ariz. -

Officials say 10 inmates have been taken to a hospital -- one in critical condition -- following a fight at the state prison in Buckeye, west of Phoenix.

Arizona Department of Corrections officials say fewer than 100 inmates at the Stiner Unit of the Lewis complex got into a fight around 4:15 p.m. Thursday.

Authorities say the fight in the prison's medium-security area was quickly brought under control.

DOC spokesman Doug Nick says one inmate was hospitalized in critical condition, while nine others were taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Nick says the situation is under control.

"They do not use lethal rounds here at the prison complexes. These are devices that are used to gain the attention of inmates and bring control to the unit. It gives officers a chance to round up inmates and get them in a place where we can control them and see them and make sure that we have absolute safety for the staff and inmates," he said.

Nick says the department's investigation continues, but authorities believe the fight resulted from racial tension between Hispanic and African-American inmates.

DOC officials say no employees were hurt and the prison will remain on lock down until at least next week.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
