Box of personal family documents found in Livonia

Jamie Knowles made quite a discovery about eight years ago. It happened as he was helping a friend renovate a vacant apartment complex in Livonia. They were putting what they thought was garbage in the back of the truck a box fell, and out of the box fell a passport.

"It's not likely people throw away their passport, so I picked it up and I started looking at everything else and I found all the savings bonds. That's a family's entire life right there," says Knowles.

Inside that box were personal documents belonging to Anthony, Cindy, Mark and Lindsay Farrugia. Documents include a marriage certificate, birth certificates, passports, savings bonds, social security cards, immunization records and more.

Knowles went home and showed his girlfriend, Corrina Johnson. She says she tried everything from calling names in the phone book to area complexes. Keep in mind, this was before the social media craze where sharing the information happens with the click of a button.

"There was an address on there. I sent a letter to the address. It never came back, I never heard anything, and when we moved I just put the stuff up and it was forgotten about," Johnson says.

Last week they re-discovered the Farrugia family's personal documents and contacted FOX 2 for help.

FOX 2's Taryn Asher checked out a couple of residences they had on record but were unable to track the family down.

UPDATE: After the story aired the family has been located and the documents have been returned.

Mayor Bill de Blasio is pulling back the reins on his plans to quickly get rid of New York City's horse-drawn carriage industry, stung by a recent outpouring of support for the colorful coaches that have clip-clopped their way through Central Park for more than 150 years. A campaign pledge to take on the horses during his first week as mayor was eclipsed by other issues.
