NJ Church Organist Accused Of Sexual Assault

Posted: Updated:
WINSLOW TOWNSHIP, N.J. -

A New Jersey church organist is accused of sexually assaulting several boys for several decades.

71-year-old Joseph Cuthbert faces 15 sex-related charges.

Police said this investigation includes five victims so far, spanning a period of 30 years.

They said the most recent case took place in September.

"I was shocked. I just couldn't believe what I was seeing," George Daisey said

Daisey was stunned by the allegations against fellow church member and friend Joseph Cuthbert.

Cuthbert had been working as a volunteer organist at Erial Community Church for the past three or four years until police arrested him at his Sicklerville home Sunday.

Investigators said he met all his victims while working at several South Jersey churches.

"I would have never guessed it, that anything like this would come up," Daisey said.

An Erial Community Church Elder told FOX 29 off camera the most recent victim and his family are not members of the church.

He said the family came to them, so they called police and provided counseling.

The Elder said they've also notified other families who have been around Cuthbert.

Sgt. Chris Dubler said there could be more victims.

"In a perfect world, we hope we don't get any more victims, but in cases like this there tends to be multiple victims over a length of time," Dubler said.

Cuthbert faces five counts each of aggravated sexual assault, criminal sexual contact, and endangering the welfare of a minor.

Daisey isn't sure how the rest of the church will react to the news.

"I'm sure we'll come together as a congregation and we'll get through it. I know that," he said.

Cuthbert is being held on a $250,000 full cash bail.

If you have any information about the case, you're asked to call Winslow Township Police at 609-561-3300.
