PHOENIX -

A 35-year-old man allegedly repeatedly slapped and punched his girlfriend on Valentine's Day because he believed posts on her Facebook news feed were private messages.

A police report states Travis Schelling kidnapped his girlfriend by refusing to allow her to leave her apartment on Feb. 14.

He allegedly punched and slapped her more times than the woman could count.

At some points during the assault, the report says she was unable to breathe and took a minute or two to catch her breath.

Schelling allegedly accused his girlfriend of talking to numerous men because he didn't understand how Facebook works. According to police, he thought everyone posting on Facebook was sending her a direct message.

He would allegedly hit her every time he would read a message.

The report states the woman tried to run for the door, but Schelling wouldn't let her leave for fear she would tell the police.

The alleged physical and sexual abuse lasted about four hours.

Eventually the woman was able to convince Schelling she wouldn't call police if he left, the report reveals.

Schelling's alleged threats prevented the woman from immediately reporting the incident.

He was arrested on Sunday and faces charges for kidnapping, sexual abuse, aggravated assault, threatening and intimidation and preventing the use of a telephone in an emergency.
