No-Class Professor

Posted: Updated:
New Brunswick, New Jersey (My9NJ) - Rutgers Professor Robert Trivers is an award winning anthropologist and author, but he’s been suspended with pay because he resisted teaching a class that he says he wasn’t qualified to teach and doesn’t know even why he was assigned to teach it in the first place.

“I resisted teaching the course when first assigned because I thought it was most inappropriate to take it away from the person who developed it, who mastered it and force it on me,” Trivers explained.

Rutgers claims that Trivers refused to teach the class, but the professor feels that he was honest with the students and told them a class on “human aggression” wasn’t his expertise.

“They claim that I refused to teach the course, that is an untruth. They claim that I violated University policy by underemphasizing my ability to do something, well again they are trying to penalize me for being honest,” Trivers said.

This isn’t the first run-in between Trivers and the University. In 2012 he was suspended when a colleague felt threatened and called the police on him.

However, students at the school seem to love him. Students on the website, RateMyProfessor.com, give stellar ratings for Trivers calling him a genius, comparing him to Darwin and saying his class is like the Matrix movies.

As of March 1st Rutgers plans to cut off Trivers’ pay.

Now questions remain like: Is resisting teaching a class you’re unqualified to teach admirable or disrespectful of your superiors? And, how many other professors are forced to teach classes that they are unqualified to teach, just because the University said so?

With the overwhelming cost of higher-education, shouldn’t all professors be experts in the field they are teaching?
