ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. (WJBK) -

A candidate running for the St. Clair Shore's police chief's position is accused of using excessive force. In a federal lawsuit, Michelle McCann accuses St. Clair Shores Deputy Chief Todd Woodcox of using excessive force against her on Aug. 3 of 2012.

After calling police regarding a domestic violence issue with her ex-boyfriend, McCann says she was taken in a pre-booking cell.

"I didn't want him to shut the door on me without an explanation of why I was arrested, so I went to open the door and that's when he pushed me and I flew across the room. I landed on some chairs that broke three ribs and punctured my lung," McCann tells FOX 2's Erika Erickson.

McCann's attorney says Woodcox could see she was hurt and lying on the floor through video cameras in his office and the front desk. McCann says she was lying there for 20 to 25 minutes before Woodcox came to check on her, and thought somebody had kicked her.

St. Claire Shore's police say McCann has two open domestic violence cases, doesn't show up to court and was intoxicated during the incident.

Woodcox responded saying, "There was absolutely no excessive force used in this case, and I've never used excessive force on anyone. If I did, I'd deserve to be punished criminally."

McCann is sticking to her story and is asking for reimbursement for $15,000 in medical bills, saying this is not the way a police chief should act.

McCann's attorney says a settlement conference is set for March 4. If no agreement is reached it will go to trial.
