Detroit officer battling insurance company for daughter's prescription

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

A Detroit police officer says his infant daughter's medication is not covered by health insurance anymore, and he cannot afford to pay out of pocket.

Brooklyn Neville was born prematurely and is at risk of contracting RSV, a respiratory virus that can be fatal for infants. Her dad's insurance covered the preventative monthly shots she received, until January.

Jason Neville requested a pharmacy appeal four times, but was denied every time.

"I find it hard to believe that it's not something that's medically necessary when the previous insurance company covered it with no issues, no questions asked," says Neville.

The shot costs nearly three thousand dollars and Brooklyn has two remaining shots.

"If they ultimately decide to not cover it, then, if I want her to have it, which she needs, then I'm going to have to come out of pocket for it," Neville says.

The emergency manager's office says a lot of Detroit city employees were with CVS Caremark before the new year and those in public safety were switched in January. The move is saving Detroit a lot of money.

"The decisions that they're making? They're not just affected by the city employee. This is what they're affecting; this is who's affected by it. She doesn't have a choice or a say in the matter," says Neville.

FOX 2 contacted CVS Caremark but did not receive a response.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
