PHOENIX (AP) - An Arizona House panel has given initial approval to a plan to spend $30 million to install 350 miles of "virtual fence' along the state's southern border with Mexico.

The House Government and Environment Committee on Monday approved the proposal from Republican Sen. Bob Worsley of Mesa for 300 towers along 350 miles of the border.

Worsley told committee members he wants to verify that the federal government is securing the border.

The bill was amended to move the new high-technology sensors from 20 miles away from the border to just one mile.

Senate Bill 1106 passed on a 4-3 party-line vote with Republicans in support. The vote came despite worries from GOP members about privacy concerns and questions as to whether the federal government should be funding the effort.
