Frequent building problems at Bates Academy delaying education, concerning parents

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

Parents of students at Detroit Public Schools' Bates Academy are concerned their children aren't getting an adequate education because of deteriorating building conditions. They are demanding a meeting with the emergency manager and superintendent of DPS.

Some parents have collected pictures over time of the school's bad conditions, showing problems such as a leaky roof and leaky pipes. But parents shared concerns about more dangerous, unhealthy classroom conditions with FOX 2's Ron Savage.

"There's mold coming up throughout the floors. I looked at my son's math class and all the tile was lifted up from the water, and you can see like mushrooms coming up out of the water. So, that's a big safety concern. There's children with asthma there, and that mold and bacteria can trigger health issues,"  says Crystal Perkins.

Bates Academy was closed Friday due to a building problem. Parents say the school has been closed frequently since the beginning of the year. A teacher at Bates says days off due to maintenance issues easily total more than three weeks of missed classes this school year, which violates the state's required minimum days for school attendance.

Detroit Public Schools released this statement:

"The educational environment of our students is of utmost importance to Detroit Public Schools. The district greatly appreciates the parents of students at Bates Academy for voicing their concerns and holding us accountable. We appreciate and share their urgency in this matter. An action plan is being developed regarding the Bates facility that will be shared with parents at a special meeting at which we will also seek their input. We expect this meeting to be scheduled before the end of the month."
- Michelle Zdrodowski, spokesperson for the district
