Man in custody after boy, 14, stabbed on DDOT bus

DETROIT (WJBK) -

The city says security cameras will be installed on a number of DDOT buses after a 14-year-old boy was stabbed Wednesday evening trying to break up an altercation.

FOX 2's Maurielle Lue reports the teen was breaking up a fight after a man on the bus said he killed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Witnesses say the boy broke up the fight outside of the bus, but was then chased back onto the bus where he was stabbed in the chest.

He was taken to the hospital and is listed in critical condition, but Detroit Police Chief James Craig says the boy is well enough to have helped police get the suspect in custody.

The Gang Intelligence Surveillance Transit tracked down the suspect and arrested him Thursday afternoon near Dexter Avenue and Collingwood Street, just a few blocks from where the stabbing took place.

Detroit residents say the busses have been unsafe for years. Riders and drivers are demanding change.

Mayoral spokesperson Alexis Wiley says the city is installing cameras on the buses and the cameras are expected to arrive next week.

"This should not have happened. People should not be scared to ride the bus. Kids should not be getting injured - no one should be getting injured while riding the bus, going to school, coming home from school, going to work," Wiley says.

FOX 2 has learned the city is also planning to hire 39 police officers that will ride the busses 24 hours a day, starting with the routes that need the most attention.
