Brookfield residents hurt in rollover crash in Kankakee

KANKAKEE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Distracted driving caused a rollover crash that injured two west suburban residents Wednesday night near Kankakee.

A Toyota Corolla was northbound on I-57 at milepost 307 about 5 p.m. when the driver became distracted and the vehicle drifted to the left, Illinois State Police said.

The driver, 25-year-old Ashley Staley, of Brookfield, told police she over-corrected, causing the car to slide into the median, ISP said. The car rolled over, then flipped end-over-end at least twice before landing on its roof in the southbound lanes.

The only passenger, Matthew Staley, 26, of Brookfield, was ejected from the vehicle, police said. The driver was also hurt. They were both taken to Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee with "non-incapacitating injuries."

Ashley Staley was cited for improper lane usage and having a passenger not wearing a seatbelt, police said.
