Water main break floods basements, leaving families without water and heat

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

A woman's basement is flooded with a few feet of water after a water main break. Sharon Rollins lives at the corner of East Forest Avenue and Elmwood Street. Other neighbors have flooding, too.

The flood has destroyed multiple furnaces, leaving the residents without water and now heat.

The street has also turned into an icy mess.

A spokesperson for the city of Detroit says the water main break happened on Feb. 4, then a six-inch main broke on Tuesday. To fix that break the city had to shut off a 30-inch main. The water is expected to be turned back on by Wednesday night.

Some residents impacted by this water main break may be eligible for compensation. The damage is surveyed on a case-by-case basis, but residents who file a claim could be reimbursed by the city.

It's a running joke that if you mention the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center to nearly anyone in Hollywood they're going to know exactly what you're talking about because odds are they might have gotten their first big break there. Would you believe some Hollywood's biggest stars -- Meryl Streep, Michael Douglas, Angela Bassett -- got their start in a big red barn in the middle of nowhere.
