Community Based Fitness Workouts In The OC

Santa Ana, CA -

Before the crack of dawn the music is thumping and heart rates are pumping at Santa Ana stadium.  Around two hundred people from around the community gather three times a week for a challenging hour long free workout, some say has been life changing.  They run stairs, do push ups, sit ups, medicine balls, and other group exercises.

For Patty Ruiz, she started joining the group around six months ago and dropped more than 50 pounds, but even more than that, her blood pressure went down and her diabetes went away. She says "this group is fun and inspiring and it's the only way I've been able to get control of my health issues. I feel so lucky to be a part of it."

It's open to everyone and started through word of mouth and social media by resident Marc Payan, who just wanted to be a "fit dad not a fat dad" when he was about to become a father.

"It started as 8 people coming to my garage to workout, just people from the neighborhood, now the past year we've had more than ten thousand people come workout with us."

He also started groups in Irvine and is spreading workout gatherings around Orange County.

With the Centers for Disease control reporting one third of Americans are obese "this is one way the community is tackling the problem in a cost effective and fun way," says Annette, who has gone from a size 22 to a 16 in less than a year.  She says as a stay at home mother, she can't afford a fancy gym membership and since the group meets at 5 am she can get her workout out of the way and still take care of the kids the rest of the day.
