Girl Power Reigns In Wrestling

Posted: Updated:
North Bergen, New Jersey (My9NJ) - Wrestling is a male dominated sport but Amanda Pace doesn't allow that stereotype to hold her back. This 10 year old, North Bergen, New Jersey resident won the wrestling national championship for girls. Pace won all three of her matches even pinning her opponents no longer than the second round and no one scored more than two points on her. Amanda gave a little insight on her match winning strategy.

“My usual game plan is to work more bottoms, but I can’t really do that so I tuck and roll,” Pace said.

North Bergen Junior Bruins’ wrestling coach and Amanda’s mentor, Idaldo Gonzalez even offered a little advice to Tamara before she squared off with the 82-pound national camp.

“Wrestling Amanda, I ask you to pray,” he said.

What’s most exceptional is that Amanda is a female wrestler in a male wrestling world. Female wrestling is gaining attraction but it not very well-known. Not many girls are competing. Since the 1970’s, girls have faced an uphill battle when it comes to participation numbers in school sports, however, the number of women wrestlers has improved. In 1994 only 794 girls wrestled, now about 8727 girls compete in high school wrestling nationally.

Gonzalez reminisced about Pace’s first steps into wrestling.

“When Amanda first wanted to wrestle we told her, you know you’re a girl in a boys sports we’re not going to treat you any differently. And her response was ‘I don’t want to be treated any differently’,” Gonzalez said.

Amanda also offered up some advice for any girls her age looking to give this “boys sport” a shot.

“Try it and if they don’t like it then the sports not for them, because it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to do this,” Pace stated.

Although Tamara did not win any match against Amanda, she felt like a champion by just giving female wrestling a chance! That is until Amanda asked for her medals back.
