Sledge hammer bandits caught mid-break in

Surveillance video shows thieves taking a sledge hammer to a wall at K&G Liquor at I-94 and Conner, attempting to break in.

"They tried two spots on the back wall and then they went to the front and started tearing the shutters off trying to get in there," says Daniel Shell of Security Central Protection.

That's when a loud voice came from the speaker of the surveillance camera and told the perpetrators they were being watched and Detroit police were on their way. The business recently upgraded its surveillance system with Security Central Protection. The warning did not phase the men, however, who continued the attempt to break in.

When police arrived the three suspects took off in separate directions.

"One guy tried to hide in front of a snowbank and then end up jumping behind the snowbank. The other two took off. One guy took off behind the building and that was his downfall. He was the last one out so he was the one that got caught," says Shell. "We were able to stop it before it happened this time. ... They got nothing."

But they weren't so lucky last week at Van Dyke Liquor and Lotto.

Authorities believe it's most likely the same group of suspects. During that break in, the suspects made off with cash, cigarettes and the owner's gun. That owner has offered a reward for anybody that returns his gun, which was locked in the safe at the time of the break-in.
