Police: Delco Homes With Power Outages Burglarized

Posted: Updated:
RADNOR TOWNSHIP, Pa. -

Thieves are preying on families without power in Delaware County. Now police are warning everyone to be on the lookout.

Michele Levy is worried someone could break into houses with power outages all across Radnor Township following last week's ice storm, but she thought the worst when it actually happened on her block 200 Berwind Road.

"My heart skipped a beat I thought "oh no, please don't let it be our home," Levy said.

It wasn't but she can relate…being a victim in the past.

"The invasion of privacy and you know the security of somebody breaking into your home, a place that should be the safest place on earth. There's nothing to compare it to," Levy said.

Radnor Police say houses on South Ithan Ave and Orchard Way were also hit after trees crashed down on utility poles…snapping wires everywhere and left thousands in the dark.

"Essentially they were entering the houses in the late afternoon, early evening hours they were forcing entry…go to the bedrooms remove a fair amount of jewelry and flee the residence. They weren't in there long," Lt. Andy Block said.

Lt. Andy Block says they have a plan for these situations.

"If we experience a power outage in a certain part of the township, we bolster our patrols just because it's dark; it's a security issue, things of that nature," Block said.

Many neighbors say it's on them to protect their property even if it means leaving home during a power outage.

"People break in. Don't like it but you've got to do everything you can to protect yourself," Levy said.
