Another Detroit water main break traps cars in frozen mess

(WJBK) -

Another water main break in Detroit has left more drivers stranded in the frozen aftermath. At least one woman's car has been stuck nearly an entire day with no one able to help her.

Cheryl Hughes backed her minivan out of her garage and got stuck right in the middle of Tyler Avenue, near Hubbell Street and Fullerton Street. Her front end was hooked on a cliff of ice.

She called everyone from Mayor Duggan's office to the Water Department, but her car was still stuck more than 12 hours later.

"No response from the city - that's angering me the most. I mean, being at work is number one. Number two, you pay taxes, you pay your water bill and have to left with this mess, as you see," Hughes tells FOX 2's Taryn Asher.

She was not the only one affected by the break.

The street was so bad an ambulance was forced to back up and go another way. At the other end of the block, near Strathmoor Street, a contractor for DTE was on his way to investigate a gas leak when he got trapped in the icy waters.  He also got stuck.

"Very, very frustrating. We had about four or five vehicles stuck here so far that we helped get unstuck while we [were] stuck," the contractor said.

Within minutes of FOX 2 placing a call to the city a crew was on the scene.

"We don't know exactly what happened, but what we do know is that someone should have come out sooner and she should not have waited all day to have the situation handled. And that's one of the things that the mayor is really serious about; he wants to make sure that people get results," says mayoral spokesperson Alexis Wiley.

And that they did.

The water department towed out the vehicles and worked to fix the water mains as an excavation crew broke down the ice.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
