Police seize over 550 illegal guns in first 6 weeks of 2014

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The Chicago Police Department seized more than 550 illegal firearms in the first six weeks of 2014, police announced Monday.

"We will build on our strategic efforts to continue reducing crime and violence, but we need support with better laws that help keep illegal

guns out of our communities and punish the criminals who carry them," Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said in a release.

The release claims that Chicago police recover more illegal guns than officers in any other city in the country — due to "lax" federal laws and in Illinois and surrounding states with regard to the purchase and transfer of guns.

Police recovered nearly 7,000 illegal guns in 2013, the department said in January.
