Same Sky Comes To Jersey City

Posted: Updated:
Jersey City, New Jersey (My9NJ) - What does Jersey City have in common with Rwanda? Francine LeFrak.

LeFrak is an award-winning television and film producer, entrepreneur and a distinguished philanthropist, who is not afraid to roll up her sleeves and get dirty to help women get out of poverty.

She has spent the last 10 years helping women in Rwanda, who survived the genocide and are affected by HIV make a living, through her Same Sky program.

Same Sky is a program, which helps women in need learn the trade of jewelry making and then their work is sold and they earn an income that they can be proud of. Same Sky has been so successful in Rwanda that it has been asked to start a program here, in New Jersey.

LeFrak thinks not enough attention is being given to problems in the states.

“I started this program in Jersey City, because as an American I felt compelled to help poverty here in this country: 47 Million people live below the poverty line and even though we have a business in Rwanda I felt that we want to start a program in America and Jersey City was a perfect place to start," LeFrak said.

The Same Sky program has started working with women who have just been released from Hudson County Jail and use The Most Excellent Way halfway house as a place to reintegrate into the community.

Former New Jersey Governor James McGreevey is the one responsible for bringing the Same Sky program across the Atlantic to the Garden State. McGreevey says that the Same Sky program not only helps reintegrate the women into the community, but it is also about spiritual healing.

“It’s a philosophy, it’s a moral philosophy, and it’s a spiritual philosophy. Being accountable of service of gratitude and so we try to change people’s hearts and souls so that they become productive citizens. But we couldn’t have done that without Same Sky,” McGreevey explained.

Although there’s no genocide in Jersey City, there is a big problem with crime and unemployment. McGreevey along with Mayor Fulop welcome the program to this city and feel that if the program works in Rwanda it should be given a chance to work in Jersey City too.

In the end, charity has to begin at home and there are needs that must be addressed and fulfilled, and LeFrak is doing just that.
