Winter Flex Alert Calls For Power Conservation

Posted: Updated:
Los Angeles, CA -

(FOX 11 / CNS) The California Independent System Operator, which manages the state's power grid, issued a statewide Flex Alert today, calling for residents to conserve power due to a shortage of natural gas triggered by cold weather across the country and Canada.

According to Cal ISO, the natural gas shortage was reducing electricity generation in the state.
"While the natural gas shortage is only impacting Southern California power plants, statewide electricity and gas conservation will help free up both electricity and gas supplies for Southern Californians,'' according to Cal ISO.

Residents were asked to reduce their energy use until 10 p.m.

Officials with Southern California Gas Co. urged its customers to conserve, but stressed that it did not anticipate any disruption to natural gas service for residential customers.

Southern California Edison offered a series of tips for residents to cut their electrical use, including:

  • Turn thermostats down or off.
  • Avoid operating appliances or pool equipment until after 7 p.m. and before 7 a.m.
  • Limit the opening of refrigerators.
  • Turn off auxiliary machinery.
  • Turn off lights in unoccupied areas.
