High School Lunch Menu For Black History Month Stirs Controversy

Posted: Updated:

February is Black History Month and one California high school is stirring up some controversy for one of the activities that they planned.

When students at Carondelet High School decided on their Black History Month activities, they didn't set out to make news. However, that's just what happened.

A special lunch menu at Carondelet High School was planned by students who are members of the black student union club at neighboring De La Salle High School.

That menu for Black History Month included fried chicken, corn bread and watermelon.

School officials say that this was done without staff approval or permission. Principal Nancy Libby sent home a letter to parents saying that quote, "at no time at Carondelet do we wish to perpetuate racial stereotypes."

"They thought this was a very clever way, in their own way, of celebrating black history month. It was as simple and naive as that. It just goes to show there is a greater need for education on everybody's part," Sister Ann Bernard, the school's interim president, told reporters.

The school's interim president is planning teacher training sessions and a school assembly. And that menu has been changed and no longer includes any of the previously mentioned food items.
