JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) - Automatic braking technology is coming to the PATH rail line that shuttles riders between New Jersey and New York City.

But the Exchange Place and World Trade Center stations will need to close for up to 45 weekends throughout the remainder of 2014 and possibly early 2015.

The work starts with closures that will begin on Friday, Feb. 14 and end by 5 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 17.

Additional service will be added to the Journal Square-33rd Street Hoboken line.

Closures will be necessary on tunnels beneath the Hudson River serving PATH's uptown 33rd Street line in 2015.

Positive train control is part of a $580 million program to replace PATH's antiquated mechanical train controls with computerized signals. Trains would automatically brake to avoid collisions, derailments or wrong switching.
