Harsh winter brings salt, supply shortage

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

As more and more snow piles up around metro Detroit, the more difficult it's becoming to find salt.

Not the kind used to help clean major roadways. But instead the kind used to keep your walkways clear and business entrances dry.

Residents are finding store shelves depleted of rock salt and products like Ice Melt.

"It's been tough for us to get salt," said Rob Williams from the Lowe's Home Improvement store in Southfield. "We're working with our suppliers to get ourselves replenished."

As of Feb. 5, this winter ranked as Detroit's seventh snowiest in recorded history with nearly 70 inches of snow.

Alternatives like water softener salts can still be used around the driveway, FOX 2's Roop Raj reports.

Note: Raj made calls around town and did find several stores, including Miller's at 13636 W. Seven Mile in Detroit and Carefree Lawn Center at 2805 Van Horn in Trenton, with a full stock of rock salt.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
