Hair Extensions - The Good, The Bad

Posted: Updated:

Women love their hair extensions. They get the volume, length and glamour they're looking for. But there is a difference when it comes to good and bad hair extensions. Sometimes those gorgeous locks can cause some serious problems- like headaches, allergic reactions or even baldness.

Sarah Rathsack wanted long beautiful hair, but what she got was anything but that.

"The ones I had were not the best, they were causing some bald spots, some dreading, lots of tangles, wasn't really the right kind, so it was really damaging my hair," said Sarah Rathsack.

Instead of getting a confidence builder, she lost her confidence.

"It's embarrassing, it's definitely not what you want, doesn't make you feel good about yourself," said Rathsack.

Now she's trying to fix the mess at a new salon, with a new stylist.

"What's frustrating to me is that extensions got such a bad rep, because of bad extension jobs, not necessarily because of the extensions," said Vered Valensi, owner and stylist, Vered Salon.

It comes down to doing your research and maybe spending more to get it right.

"Of course there are salons that are going to charge less and ones that are going to charge more," said Valensi. It's definitely a luxury and not a necessity, so if you can't get the right ones, the best ones, then don't get them, because it doesn't look good."

It's not just about how your hair looks, its about making sure your hair doesn't get damaged.

"You have to really take care of your hair. You have to be delicate with it, you have to brush it everyday you have to get rid of the loose hairs that naturally fall out of your head. Naturally when you have extensions, they get stuck between the bonds, and the scalp so then they form like knots and dreadlocks," said Valensi.

If your hair is fine, you wont be able to keep the extensions in for very long, but if your hair is thicker, you can keep them in longer.

"There are so many different techniques and most of them are not that great,  only certain brands that have the best bonds, that aren't going to damage your hair and the best hair texture that's going to match your own hair," said Valensi.

Believe it or not, some people try doing it themselves. Something that experts don't recommend.

"Unfortunately there are many beauty supplies that get their hair out of the country. They sell it for really cheap and I am not even sure its human hair. They basically sell it to the younger crowd, that can't afford the luxurious hair extensions and go home and do it themselves. The results are never good," said Valensi.

When its done right, you feel like a million bucks.

EXCLUSIVE -- LL Cool J grew and evolved from a hip hop artist out of Hollis, Queens, to a Hollywood TV and movie star. But he always stayed true to hip hop culture. We'd see him backstage at concerts just hanging out with us, so when I heard he was back in New York for the summer I had to find out why. I tracked him down to a Midtown Manhattan recording studio for this exclusive interview.
