Social Media Makings Us Think Less? Researcher Thinks So

Posted: Updated:

Is social media making us stupid? New research suggests social media may make it harder for people to think for themselves.

According to researchers, not only does the use of social media erode our analytical abilities, it also erodes our common sense! The reason, researchers think is because information from social network is so quick and easy, and comes at such high volumes that we are actually not working our ability to learn when using them all the time.

Here's the study that went along with this claim: The University of Edinburgh took 20 people and asked the same trick questions repeatedly. After being asked the question for the first time, respondents were then put into groups so they could see others' responses. What was found was that answers did not improve because people seemed to be copying what others were saying. No real thought was put into thinking through the trick question.

The author of the study likened it to how many people now prefer to look at Facebook or twitter to get their answers, instead of coming up with their own opinions.
