New Anti-Smoking Ads Take A Vain Approach To Teen Smoking

Posted: Updated:

The FDA is attempting a different approach to helping teens resist tobacco that doesn't directly involve health issues.

Instead of focusing on what is now universally accepted by expects as negative health effects (blood pressure, cancer, heart problems), the FDA is appealing to teens' obsession with their looks.

The ads focus significantly on skin care and even show graphic portrayals of some side effects of smoking (like teeth discoloration) that don't just involve overall livelyhood and long term health effects.

The American Lung Association reports that 86% of smokers picked up the habit under the age of 21. This number comes as a surprise considering that the D.A.R.E program, which fights drug abuse, was founded and began implementing itself into curriculums nationwide in 1983.

Ads featuring graphic content have sparked general interest in quitting, so there is reliable research and evidence that suggests that these graphic ads might just be harsh enough to help young people quit and prevent teens from trying the substance.
