Delaware Valley Slowly Recovers From Wednesday Snow Storm

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

It was a cold morning, and for residents in the Delaware Valley, it was a slippery drive to work, and that's if their homes have power.

FOX 29's Steve Keeley was in Horsham, Pa. today where there was an accident. Police from three towns came to direct traffic.

"There are so many traffic lights out," said Keeley.

CHECK: Latest traffic information

At the intersection of the downed traffic light, Keeley said that a driver had tried to drive through the accident scene without stopping and listening to police. Keeley called it DWS, "driving while stupid." There was a temporary stop sign placed at the scene, but it was stacked with snow, so many drivers probably didn't even see it.

Keeley later moved to Abington, Pa. He said that officials told him that they got more 911 calls yesterday than they did during Hurricane Sandy. Keeley stood by the Lukoil gas station. However, both the gas station and the nearby WAWA were not open.

Chester County was hit very hard yesterday, and Dawn Timmeney was in Downington, Pa., right near a big beautiful tree that fell and pulled down wires all over the place. There's caution tape everywhere and trees are still snow and ice-covered.

Businesses are still in the dark, the McDonald's and the super-WAWA included. Dawn moved to East Brandywine, Pa. by 8, and the story was the same, downed lines, tree branches everywhere. There was a WAWA on the way that was open with power, and the place was packed!

"It's kind of weird to drive down route 30 and see every business closed!" remarked Timmeney.

Karen Hepp drove around Lower Merion, Pa., and the story was still the same. The beautiful, historic trees are suffering under the weight and many are at risk of falling. Karen then drove to Lower Providence. It was definitely a maze because roads are closed all around. Karen was impressed with how quickly the rate at which power was restored. Hopefully, power will be restored all over very soon!

If you're in the dark, how long can you store food?

According to Dr. Jen Caudle, the refrigerator keeps cold for about four hours during outages, and the freezer keeps cold for about 48 hours. Remember, temperature, is key. Make sure the food stays below 40 degrees.

Do not taste the food to see if it's good. Use all your other senses to judge. Feel the food, look at the food, and smell it. Do not tast the food!

It is also not a good idea to put things in the snow, said Dr. Caudle. Putting stuff in the snow does not stop sun from warming it up. Also there are lots of animals and bugs outside.

Putting food in a cooler filled with dried ice is a good idea though. Watch the whole segment above to hear more of what Dr. Jen had to say.
