Michigan woman located 37 years after jail escape

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Authorities say a Michigan Corrections Department officer's decision to look through old files on fugitives led them to a woman who escaped from a Michigan prison 37 years ago. She was living in San Diego.

Department spokesman Russ Marlan says 60-year-old Judy Lynn Hayman will be returned to Michigan to complete her sentence for attempted larceny.

How long she'll be imprisoned will be up to the state Parole Board. Hayman had served eight months of an 18- to 24-month sentence for attempting to steal clothes from a store. She could face additional time for escaping.

Hayman's capture happened mostly because of winter weather and a decision by Lt. Charles Levens to blow the dust off old files and send escapees' fingerprints to the FBI.

Hayman's fingerprints matched those of a woman who had been arrested in San Diego.
