Gov. Quinn declares February `Rethink What You Drink` month

A new study suggests that too much sugar consumption will increase your chances of premature death.

The study warns Americans that too much sugar is bad for the heart.

Drinking one can of soda per day is equal to downing 10 teaspoons of sugar.

The Illinois Alliance to Prevent Obesity worked with Governor Quinn to declare February, ‘Rethink What You Drink' month.

"Energy drinks, sweet teas, lots of people are drinking those sweetened teas now. Coffee drinks and fruit drinks. That's a big one, people sort of think those might be healthy for you, because they have maybe 10 percent juice, but they're really mostly sugar water," Illinois Alliance to Prevent Obesity's Executive Director, Elissa Bassler, said.

These types of drinks contain anywhere from two teaspoons all the way to 13 teaspoons of sugar.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention took a look at data from adults over the past twenty years.

They found that most people were taking in more than 10 percent of the daily sugar limit recommended by the World Health Organization.

Adults whose daily caloric intake consisted of more than 25 percent sugar were twice as likely to die from heart disease.

"This compound is very addictive and very difficult to get around and very damaging," Chief of Cardiology at Rush University Medical Center, Kim A. Williams, said.

Williams agrees with the study's findings, "When you have higher insulin levels, it's actually a growth hormone. It makes you fatter and it increases the amount of plaque in your coronary arteries. So there's multiple ways in which the sugar ends up resulting in heart disease."
