Police Officer Injured While Stopping Armed Robbery

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

An injured officer is helped into an ambulance after a violent confrontation with a suspected robber.

It happened at Castor Avenue and Hellerman Street. A Philadelphia Police Officer is recovering at Einstien Medical Center with head injuries.

The well-known Oxford Circle beat cop is being credited for stopping a strong armed robbery in progress.

The confrontation ended with the suspect being shot dead. Evidence marks the spot of a violent struggle in Oxford Circle.

"The officer was being faced with a violent resistance," Inspector Ben Naish said.

Police say a 17-year veteran cop was walking his beat on Castor Avenue when he came across a man getting robbed of money and a smartphone.

After getting punched in the face, the officer tased the suspect twice and deployed his pepper spray, but the suspect still kept coming.

"The suspect then picked up the officer and body slammed him and slammed him violently onto the concrete. The officer then pulled his fire arm and shot the suspect one time," Naish said.

The 45 year old suspect who was unarmed according to police died on his way to the hospital. SKYFOX captured the officer being led into an ambulance where we're told he had a cat scan for head injuries.

Local store owners tell us the 2nd district beat officer is a fixture here in Oxford Circle visiting businesses daily on Castro Avenue.

David On, from Murano Deli told us, "He's great guy and you know he tries to help everybody out I know him pretty well so I hope he's ok."

Similar sentiments echoed from Market Owner, Kingsley Afum, "He's a nice man anytime every morning he makes sure he visits us see how we are doing."

Police say the officer is being credited with a decline in the very crime he helped stop. He was assigned to this beat 6 months ago to help curb the increase in strong armed robberies.

"The community has been totally endeared to the officers presence he's made a tremendous impact on making the whole community feel safer."

Police say surveillance video showed the entire incident. Neither the officer nor the suspect who died has been identified.

The 39-year-old officer we are told is being held here tonight for observation, as procedure, he'll be on administrative duty following an internal affairs investigation.
