CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man robbed a North Community Bank branch Monday afternoon on the Near North Side.

Police responded about 12:55 p.m. to a teller alarm at the bank in the 800 block of North State Street, officials said.

The suspect took an unknown amount of cash and ran away, according to police and the FBI. No one was hurt.

The robber is described as a black man, about 5-foot-1 to 5-foot-3, and 125-135 pounds, according to the FBI. He has a dark complexion, was wearing eyeglasses and carrying a black messenger bag.

CTA officials closed the westbound stairwell of the nearby Chicago Red Line stop because police deemed it part of the crime scene, spokeswoman Katherine Hosinski said.

Passengers were able to access the station through other entrances, and service was not affected, she said. The stairwell has since reopened.

No one was in custody late Monday afternoon.

Loyola University Chicago's Water Tower Campus is located across the street from the bank. A crime alert posted to the university's website Monday afternoon asks students or community members with information on the robbery to contact the FBI at (312) 421-6700.
