CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man has been charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery in a shooting Thursday morning in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on the South Side.

Jovan Williams, 22, has been charged with one felony count each of attempted first degree murder and aggravated battery/discharge of a firearm, according to a statement issued by the police News Affairs.

Williams shot a 35-year-old man in the head about 9:15 a.m. in the 2400 block of West 63rd Street, police said.

The man was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in critical condition, police said.

Williams was arrested a short time later in the 6200 block of South Campbell Avenue, police said. Officers noticed he matched the description of the suspect in the shooting and caught him after a brief foot chase.

Officers also recovered a gun during the course of the investigation, police said.

Chicago Police Superintendent Garry F. McCarthy announced on Monday morning that during the month of January police seized more than 425 illegal firearms.

"We continue to make progress, like the near all-time lows we say last February and Match, but it will become more challenging without better laws that help keep illegal guns out of our communities and punish the criminals who carry them," McCarthy said.

Chicago police mentioned Williams in a press release about the guns, citing his previous conviction in April of 2012 and April 2011.

According to Chicago Police, in 2012 Williams was convicted of Felon in Possession of a Weapon and sentenced to three years in prison. Instead of serving the full time, he was made eligible for boot camp, credited with time served and paroled in September 2013.

Williams, of the 6600 block of South St. Lawrence Avenue, is scheduled to appear in bond court Saturday, according to police.
