Man fatally struck by SUV in Aurora

Posted: Updated:

A homeless man died early Saturday after he was struck by an SUV in west suburban Aurora.

Donald L. Early, 54, was walking south on Broadway Avenue just north of Spring Street when he was struck by a 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander shortly before 4 a.m., according to Aurora police.

Early's last known address was listed at the Hesed House homeless shelter in the 600 block of South River Street in Aurora, police said.

The driver of the SUV, 39-year-old Cherise Wardlow, stayed at the scene, police said. She told officers she was traveling south on Broadway in the right lane when she heard "a loud thump" from the front of the vehicle.

Police said when she stopped and discovered she had struck the man, Wardlow called police. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy at the Kane County Coroner's office was scheduled for Monday, but results were not immediately available.

Wardlow, of west suburban Montgomery, was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, police said. There were no signs of alcohol or drugs at the scene.

Aurora police are investigating, and ask anyone who witnessed the crash to call (630) 256-5330.
