CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A train carrying cars caught on fire Friday evening in the Far South Side Hegewisch neighborhood.

A railroad car was carrying automobiles near East 136th Street and South Brainard Avenue when one of the vehicles inside caught fire about 7:20 p.m., according to Fire Media Affairs. The fire then spread to several of the other vehicles.

South Shore trains resumed service about 10:48 p.m. after being halted at the nearby Hegewisch station due to equipment cleanup, according to alerts on the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District website.

CTA No. 30 South Chicago buses were rerouted in both directions and 136th and Brainard via South Avenue O, East 134th Street and South Baltimore Avenue, according to an alert issued by the CTA about 10:20 p.m.
