Villa Rica involved in shootout with driver

Posted: Updated:
VILLA RICA, Ga. -

Police responding to a call of shots fired in a Villa Rica neighborhood on Friday night.

A spokesperson for the Villa Rica Police Department said that police arrived to a neighborhood off of Berry Drive and were confronted by the driver of a vehicle. They say that police and the driver exchanged fire before the driver fled into the woods.

Police say the driver ended up at a home near Oakwood Place and Ashbury Drive. The family inside was able to make it out safely as police arrived. After a short standoff, police say the man surrendered and was taken into custody.

Investigators say the family inside the home had no relation to the driver.

Police are looking into if the man had initially discharged his firearm in the air and possibly at passing vehicles prompting the call out to the neighborhood.

The driver will likely be charged with the firing of the weapon among other charges.

The officer involved in the shootout was placed on paid administrative leave which is standard in this type of cases.
