What Is Goalball? How Do You Play It?

Posted: Updated:

It's the size of a rubber basketball but Goalball is completely different.  The hollow, three pound ball, has two bells inside which is key to making this sport work.  The ball must be heard in order for athletes to play the game.

That's because Goalball was specifically designed for people who are visually impaired.  Two teams of three people play across from each other on a court with raised lines so athletes can feel where to be positioned during the game.

The players wear goggles to ensure a level playing field since some are legally blind while others are partially blind.

The goal is to throw the ball like much like in bowling, but to score past opponents into a goal, like soccer.  The players lay sideways down on the court, often times, to defend their goal and block the ball from going past them to score.

It's a Paraolympic sport gaining popularity with youth with visual impairments.  Logan Cooper, 13, is legally blind and he plays Goalball at Junior Blind of America.  He says,"I like playing Goalball because I feel like part of a team and I didn't find other sports I could play as well."  He says despite not being able to see, he still has a vision of winning Paraolympic gold.

More than half the population of New York City rides public transportation to work. No other metropolis in this country even approaches that percentage or the MTA's total number of riders. For that reason, New York likely ranks as the most energy-efficient city in the nation. But what would it take to make the city even more energy-efficient or even self-sufficient?
