Weekend Movies: Tough With Super Bowl Going On

Posted: Updated:

Most people aren't going to the movies Super Bowl weekend, which is why Matt Atchity says this week's new releases are more of a fumble that a touchdown.

"It's a good weekend if you're in LA or New York because there's a good film opening here but the rest of the country, they've got it pretty rough.

The big studio release is "Labor Day", directed by the usually beloved Jason Reitman. But Matt says he and other critics were surprised at how not good this one was.

"This movie has some very effective scenes in it...and that makes the movie frustrating because a lot of the rest of the movie doesn't work so well. So the critics don't like it so much, it's only about 33 percent on the Tomatometer which is low for director Jason Reitman who brought us "Up in the Air" and "Juno".

Zac Efron stars in the new rom-com "That Awkward Moment"...Matt says the title takes on a new meaning after being screened for critics.

"That Awkward Moment...where the critics don't like your movie at all...this one's rough. This one suffers from a very unfortunate script, the joke's just aren't there....great actors, great cast and they're all kind of just wasted."

The one new release worth seeing is a documentary called Tim's Vermeer, which is a look into how Johannes Vermeer painted such detailed pieces.

"It's a fascinating, fascinating movie that raises some interesting questions about art and obsession...critics really love it, it's certified fresh at 93%. This is a great movie".

Here's a combination of words you probably never expected to see together: "Oscar nominated" and "Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa". It's out on DVD this week.
