Frustrated L.I. man starts filling potholes on his own

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Bobby Fitzgerald doesn't work for the Public Works Department, although his "side job" suggests otherwise.

"I start with my bucket, scoop up some dirt, take my broom to clean up and take my shovel and go to the next one," Bobby Fitzgerald said.

The 55-year-old livery driver has been filling the potholes in his Levittown, L.I., neighborhood on his own because he is fed up by the slow response to complaints he has made about them, he said.

Public Works crews have covered Fitzgerald's patch, so clearly he is on their radar.

Mike Deery, a spokesman for Hempstead, called Fitzgerald "off the mark" and "couldn't be more wrong." Deery said that using sand, which Fitzgerald does, actually makes the problem worse.

Fitzgerald said that if the town asks him to stop he would comply only if it proves to him that something more will be done.
