Englewood `man cave` teaches local kids determination

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Where are you watching Super Bowl XLVIII? Whether you'll be at home, a friend's party or a local pub, chances are it's not going to be as epic as one Chicagoan's "man cave."

But this man uses his shrine to the Chicago Bears as much more than just a place to escape.

When Good Day Chicago's Jake Hamilton walked into Darryl Smith's Englewood home, he thought he was just covering a story about a man cave, but Darryl showed him that it's much more than that.

We all need our escape. Batman has the Bat Cave, Superman has the Fortress of Solitude and Darryl Smith has his Chicago Bears man cave.

It goes without saying that Smith is an ultimate Bears fan. But his man cave, an epic transformation of the basement of his Englewood home, is more than a testament to the blue and orange.

The man cave is a constantly evolving masterpiece of testosterone, one that he's been continuously working on for two years. It features everything you could think of - a massive mecca of entertainment, a place to rest your head after the game, a place to pour yourself a victory beer and a bathroom that shows how he really feels about Green Bay Packers fans.

But in addition to bleeding blue and orange, Smith is a community activist who coaches a local kids football team. He says at the end of the day, the man cave isn't about supporting the Bears or getting away from the world. It's about showing kids what you can do when you put your mind to something.

It's not just the jerseys or the giant inflatable bear. It's not even the TV above the toilet, which was awesome, by the way. Smith's man cave is about showing what it means love something, and the good that can come from that.

It's about knowing that there's another world out there - a better world. If we care enough, we can get there too.

The only place you can see Super Bowl XLVIII is right here on FOX 32. We'll have a four-hour pregame show from 1-5 p.m. on Feb. 2. Don't forget to tune in! Kickoff will be at 5:25 p.m.
