Adults and teens are still tanning despite warnings

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Making tanning illegal for teenagers is a hotly debated topic in the Michigan legislature. But a new study shows the warnings about the dangers of indoor tanning aren't keeping them away.

About forty percent of adults and adolescents have exposed themselves to indoor tanning beds, which has doctors frustrated and concerned.

"Tanning beds have been listed like tobacco and asbestos as carcinogens. They are dangerous and people should avoid them. But despite that message people are still exposing themselves to tanning beds," says Dr. Melissa Piliang, a Cleveland Clinic doctor.

Researchers say the findings show how prevalent indoor tanning is, especially among young people. Indoor tanning has been linked to skin cancer, and exposure can increase your risk.

Michigan law requires a minor to get parental permission before using a tanning bed, but many argue that law is rarely enforced.
